NERC Takes Over Kaduna Disco Over ₦456.5 Billion Debt

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has dissolved the board of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDC) following the company’s accumulation of approximately ₦456.5 billion in market obligations.

The regulator has also begun the process of finding a replacement core investor for the electricity distribution company.

According to NERC, KAEDC recorded the highest electricity distribution losses among Nigeria’s 11 DisCos in the first quarter of 2026, with an ATC&C loss rate of 69.66%.

The commission said the company’s financial challenges worsened after Africa Smart Investment (ASI) assumed operational control in June 2024. KAEDC reportedly accumulated more than ₦118.6 billion in additional market debt between then and May 2026.

NERC also disclosed that KAEDC paid only 41.93% of its adjusted market invoices in 2025, contributing to a market shortfall of about ₦46.71 billion.

The intervention is aimed at addressing the company’s financial and operational challenges and improving electricity distribution in Kaduna State.
