NYSC Resumes Payment of Arrears After Two-Month Break

After weeks of uncertainty, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed payment of arrears to corps members, disbursing funds on Wednesday for the first time since June 3. The arrears are tied to the recently approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance announced by the Federal Government.

The development comes nearly two months after NYSC last paid, fueling frustration among serving and recently discharged corps members. The arrears cover the period from July 2024 to March 2025, part of the government’s broader effort to ease economic hardship among Nigerian youths.

Back in April, during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu assured that both serving and recently discharged corps members would benefit from the new allowance. “Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details” he had pledged. Nafiu also stressed that the government remains “responsible and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.”

Confirmation of Wednesday’s payment came from a former corps member who spoke with newsmen on condition of anonymity. “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count” the source said.
