Super Eagles Face Lesotho in Must-Win Clash as 2026 World Cup Hopes Hang in the Balance

Super Eagles Face Lesotho in Must-Win Clash as 2026 World Cup Hopes Hang in the Balance

Attention shifts to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, where the Super Eagles face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in a decisive encounter that could define Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes were nearly extinguished after their 1-1 draw with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in September. However, a lifeline emerged when FIFA docked South Africa points for fielding an ineligible player, narrowing the gap at the top of Group C and reviving Nigeria’s chances.

Following the ruling, Nigeria sit three points behind Benin and South Africa with two fixtures remaining, reshaping the qualification race and keeping the Super Eagles’ hopes alive.

Nigeria cannot afford to drop points in either of their remaining matches and must also hope South Africa falter in their encounters with Zimbabwe and Rwanda. With several teams still mathematically capable of topping the group, victory in Polokwane is non-negotiable for the three-time African champions.

Benin currently lead Group C with 14 points and a +4 goal difference, followed by South Africa with 14 points and +2. Nigeria are third with 11 points and +2, while Rwanda trail closely with 11 points and a neutral goal difference.

The Super Eagles have met Lesotho three times since 2019, winning twice and drawing once. The Crocodiles held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on November 16, 2023, and will look to repeat that feat on home soil.

Nigeria’s qualifying campaign has been inconsistent, recording two wins, five draws and one defeat so far. Lesotho, on the other hand, have secured two wins, three draws and three losses, proving to be a resilient side.

Ahead of the crucial match, head coach Éric Chelle expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and focus. He urged his players to start strong and stay disciplined throughout the game. Chelle acknowledged football’s unpredictability, noting that weather, officiating and individual errors can affect outcomes, but stressed that their objective remains securing maximum points.

Match Details:
The Group C clash kicks off on Friday, October 10, at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, by 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigeria time).
