Celebrating Vision, Service and Community Impact Through Pickleball

At the heart of Lagbede Pickleball Club, Ondo, stands the visionary leadership of Chief Prof. Bonaventure A. Akinlosotu, Founder and Patron. His passion for sports, youth development and community service has driven the introduction and growth of pickleball in Ondo State — an initiative brought from the diaspora to create opportunities for people of different ages and backgrounds to stay active, build discipline, teamwork and healthy living, and discover the power of collective effort.

That vision found powerful expression in the grand finale of the Inaugural Annual Pickleball Tournament, Ondo. The event brought an exciting and memorable tournament to a successful close, drawing enthusiastic spectators to the stadium and reaching a wider audience through Facebook Live. The atmosphere was charged with sportsmanship, encouragement and a strong sense of community, as captured in the photo collage accompanying this report.

The occasion was further elevated by the presence of distinguished guests. Princess Fadejogun Ade-Ayoola, founder of Eki Chat Show — a community media platform focused on issues affecting the Ondo Kingdom, youth empowerment, teenagers and local development — made a surprise visit. She shared her life journey and inspired the young players to believe in themselves, pursue their dreams and recognized that there is no limit to what they can achieve.

Mrs Evelyn Olamidekun Lebi, Chairperson of the Ondo State Sports Council, who represented the Ondo State Commissioner of Sports & Youth Development, also graced the event. She commended the organisers for introducing an innovative, community-focused initiative and specifically praised Chief Prof. Bonaventure A. Akinlosotu for his dedication to giving back through sports. She noted that government cannot do it alone and encouraged individuals, organisations and Ondo indigenes at home and abroad to contribute to societal development.

Also in attendance was Co-Patron/Advisor Prof. Sunday R. Ogunduyile, former Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, alongside other supporters, officials, participants and lovers of the sport. Beyond the matches, the grand finale featured the presentation of awards, medals and certificates to participants and individuals whose dedication helped make the tournament a success. These recognitions served both as reward and as encouragement to continue pursuing excellence and contributing to sports development.

One particularly memorable moment was the presentation of keys to the beneficiary, with Princess Fadejogun Ade-Ayoola having the honour of handing them over — a gesture that symbolized collective effort, compassion and community service. The inaugural tournament ultimately demonstrated more than sporting achievement. It highlighted the power of sports, mentorship, community and collective responsibility to create opportunities and inspire the next generation. The vision of the founders and Patron of Lagbede Pickleball Club shows what is possible when passion for sport is combined with a genuine desire to give back and make a lasting difference.

Gratitude: Sincere appreciation goes to the Executive Committee, Patron and Co-Patron/Advisor, special guests, officials, players, volunteers, supporters, viewers and everyone who contributed to the success of this historic tournament. To all who came to the stadium, joined virtually, cheered the players or supported the vision: thank you. Together, we made the Inaugural Annual Pickleball Tournament a remarkable success.
