SUNDAY BLISS: RITUALS THAT MAKE THE DAY FEEL LIKE A HUG

SUNDAY BLISS: RITUALS THAT MAKE THE DAY FEEL LIKE A HUG

Sundays are like the soft exhale after a long week, the one day where the world seems to move in slow motion, inviting you to linger just a little longer in bed. The air feels different on a Sunday—lighter, almost like it’s whispering, “Hey, take it easy.”

Remember those chaotic Sunday mornings growing up? The ones where almost every African dad would be pacing at the door, loudly threatening to leave the whole family behind if everyone didn’t hurry up for church. Meanwhile, you were still staring at your clothes, wondering what on earth to wear.

These days, Sunday mornings can be their own peaceful production—GRWM to church content creation, gospel or soul music spilling softly into the living room (think Hillsong Worship, BBO, Anendlessocean, or your favorite chilled playlist), a fluffy bathrobe moment, hair up, skincare lined neatly on the counter, and the quiet luxury of knowing there’s nowhere urgent to be.

For some, it’s still about dressing up for church, attending service online, or spending quiet time in prayer and gratitude journaling. For others, it’s about indulging in the soft, comforting Sunday breakfast—fluffy akara with pap, warm bread and egg, golden pancakes, or fried plantain with omelet. Add in a few minutes of gentle stretching and a warm cup of tea, and you’ve got the perfect start to the day.

Sunday afternoons have their own charm. Back then, it was the anticipation of Sunday rice—the meal that brought instant joy and guaranteed a blissful post-lunch nap. Today, it might still be the same for some, but for others, it’s catching up with old friends, indulging in self-care (face masks, painting nails, oiling your hair, or laying out clothes for Monday), watching football matches, laughing at comedy shows, binging your favorite series, curling up with a book, or scrolling through articles with tea in hand.

Then comes Sunday evening—the quiet golden hours. Maybe it’s a soft playlist filling the room while you meal-prep for the week, or a slow walk in the neighborhood to soak in the fading sunlight. For some, it’s a cozy family gathering where cousins you haven’t seen in months suddenly appear, bringing stories, laughter, and the chaos of children darting around. For others, it’s lighting a candle, wrapping yourself in your softest blanket, and sinking into a movie marathon or a journal session that helps you reset your mind for the week ahead.

Whether you spend it in the company of others or in the gentle comfort of your own space, Sundays are a reminder that joy doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as your favorite song on repeat, the smell of fresh rain, a hug from someone you love, or that extra slice of cake you absolutely didn’t plan to eat.

Because when done right, a Sunday isn’t just another day off—it’s a love letter to yourself. And what better way to start the week than with a little self-love?

HERE IS TO A CALM SUNDAY, ENJOY
